Undefeated Team Italy dominates U18 European Softball Championship with mercy-rule shutouts over Denmark and Sweden

The Italians won an 18-0 three-inning mercy-rule game against Denmark and a 13-0 five-inning mercy-rule contest versus Sweden at the U18 European Softball Championship in Prague, Czech Republic. Team Italy returns for two games on Wednesday, August 2, 2023 beginning with a 9:30 am (local time) battle against Ireland followed by an afternoon clash with KIngdom of the Netherlands at 4:30 pm (local time).

Team Italy U18 softball manager Andrea Longagnani called on winning pitcher Chiara Di Lauro, who threw three innings of one-hit ball with four strikeouts against Denmark. Sveva Moggi went 2-for-2 with two RBI and one run scored. Delia Manera doubled, walked twice and scored three times. Lucrezia Moretti also crossed the plate three times, tripled and walked.

Pitcher Delia Manera got the start against Sweden and did not disappoint as she only allowed one hit in two innings of work. Reliever Sara Desii was equally as impressive, throwing three innings and giving up two hits with five strikeouts. 

Offensive highlights included an RBI triple by Noemi Cortesi, a triple from Lucia Polini, and a two-run double by Felicia Di Pancrazio. The Italians demonstrated speed on the bases as Livia Bernardi, Chiara Di Lauro and Chiara Albertin collected stolen bases.
