Team Italy wins Baseball5 European Championship debut with victory over Estonia

After losing 6-5 in the first match of the best-of-three games against Estonia on day one of the Baseball5 European Championship in Druskininkai, Lithuania, Team Italy rebounded with 17-3 and 6-0 victories to win the set against the Estonians on November 7, 2023.

Despite Team Italy committing two errors in the fifth inning and enabling Estonia to come back from a 5-3 deficit to win 6-5 in the first of three games in the Baseball5 European Championship debut on November 7, 2023, the Italians bounced back with 17-3 and 6-0 victories to win the best-of-three series against the Estonians. During the second set, Team Italy took a commanding 6-1 early before adding ten more runs in the last inning after excellent hitting performances from Filippo Sabatini and Beatrice Deregibus. In the final contest, the Italians demonstrated excellent defense in the 6-0 shutout to secure the best-of-three series victory over Estonia.  

Team Italy Baseball5 manager Maurizio Balla said, “We were better than Estonia, but in the first set we complicated our lives a bit with a bit of tension which led us to give up three runs.. However, the team immediately recovered and played well for the rest of the series. It was a morale-boosting success in light of tomorrow when we will play three best-of-three matches.”

Team Italy returns for games on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 against Moldova at 9 am (local time), Lithuania at 11:30 am (local time) and Czech Republic at 4:45 pm (local time).
