Team Italy shuts out Hungary 20-0 in U12 European Baseball Championship

The Azzurrini posted a three-inning mercy-rule 20-0 shutout over Hungary in the U12 European Baseball Championship in Vienna, Austria on Wednesday, July 6, 2022

Team Italy U12 pitchers Tommaso Destro, Noah Uttaro and Marco Viani threw a combined three-inning mercy-rule perfect game with a total of seven strikeouts to blank Hungary 20-0 in the U12 European Baseball Championship in Vienna, Austria on Wednesday, July 6, 2022.

Azzurrini manager Stefano Burato had to be proud of his offense. Team Italy scored once in the first inning before adding seven more runs in the second inning and blasting off with a 12-run frenzy in the third inning. Leadoff hitter Matteo Almonte went 3-for-4 with one double, three RBI and three runs scored. Second baseman Riccardo Orsenigo also picked up three hits with two RBI and two runs scored. Catcher Dorian Cornelli went 2-for-3 and scored twice. Marco Viani was productive at the plate going 1-for-2 with two walks, two RBI and two runs scored. Anita Bissa also got in on the action with a three-run triple and one run scored.

ITALY-HUNGARY BOX SCORE

Team Italy faces the Netherlands on Thursday, July 7, 2022 at 3 pm (local time) in its final Group A round-robin game. Both teams will advance to the semifinals and play against one of the two Group B leaders, either Czech Republic or Germany, on Friday, July 8, 2022. The winners of those games will move on to the U12 European Baseball Championship final, which takes on Saturday, July 9, 2022 at 6 pm. The Bronze Medal game precedes the Gold Medal game at 3 pm.
