ROME – The Italian Softball League is 1/3 the way toward the midpoint of the season, and 2012 champ Caserta has yet to relinquish its reign atop the league.
All eyes were on the Caserta-Forli series this past weekend, as both squads came into battle boasting the best record at 3 wins and only 1 loss. Caserta stomped host Forli 16-2 in the first match-up Saturday afternoon, Bianca Novelli led the Caserta attack with two homeruns and Alice Fiorio smacked a grand slam. It was an early knockout requiring only 5 innings. Forli made things interesting in the nightcap, putting 2 runs across the board in the final inning, but ultimately coming up short in the 5-4 loss, which allowed Caserta to return home unscathed.
Bollate came off a bye-week to sweep last place Fermana at home before the home crowd. Bollate and Fermana had to meet on Easter Sunday to complete the series, after showers shut down action on Saturday at the start of the doubleheader. Bollate feasted on Fermana 6-4 and 5-0 to carry out a sweep and remain 1 game behind league leading Caserta.
Legnano visited the beehive in Titano to take on the Hornets and proceeded to clip the host’s wings, 9-2 and 10-0 (4 inn.), completing a sweep that puts Legnano at the .500 mark after a dismal season start.
IBL’s 2012 new entry, Blue Girls Bologna continued to prove that they belong in Europe’s most competitive softball league. The Blue Girls split their series with La Loggia and registered an impressive 7-0 blanking before being stopped 4-1 in the tail end of the doubleheader.
Nuoro remained idle but will return for action in Week 4 when they welcome Bollate to Sardinia for a pair of games.
