Twelve games remain, but IBL playoff picture looking clear after this weekend’s results

ROME – Four weeks and 12 regular season games remain on the Italian Baseball League schedule, but unless there is a cosmic shift in the progression of the season, the postseason picture has all but been determined. Six games now separate fourth-place Nettuno from fifth-place Parma.

Over the weekend, Bologna dropped a game to Godo, but finished the season series having won five of six games with the Knights. Bologna remains in first-place but only two games separate the Bolognesi from fourth-place Nettuno.

Both Rimini and San Marino are one game off the pace and are tied for second-place.  San Marino iced a season sweep of Parma, essentially ending any thoughts the Parmagiani may have had of stealing a playoff berth with a late season charge.

The Rimini Pirates closed out their season series with Grosseto, putting up 34 runs over the final three games to easily sweep the Orioles this weekend.  Of the six games where these two teams face off against each other, Rimini only surrendered one loss at the hands of the team from Tuscany.

Nettuno yielded just two runs over the course of its three-game series with last-place Novara.  Nettuno capped a six-game season sweep of Novara with a 13-0 shutout game that was shut down after 7 innings when Novara threw up the white flag.

The top four finishers of the IBL regular season will qualify for a round robin semifinal where each playoff team would play a three-game series against the other three teams, with the two best finishers of the ‘robin’ heading to the best-of-7 Italian Baseball Series.
