ROME – After 12 weeks of intense action in the Italian Softball League, Caserta still remains on top of the mountain, looking down at the rest of the field.  The 2011 Champion has been in cruise control since last year, often toying with opponents by taking games to the brink of failure before coming away with a win.

The Caserta softballers were up to their old tricks during a 1-2 sweepage of underachieving Forli. Forli had thoughts of returning to the .500 level, but Caserta pushed Forli down to three games below .500.  Caserta has only dropped four games on the year, half of games second-place La Loggia has surrendered.

La Loggia pulled off a feat that has not been done this year, and that is to take out the brooms against the big, bad Blue Girls Bologna.  Although it is the first year for Bologna to battle in the Italian Softball League, the Girls have held their own and have pretty much been stationed in second-place for the large part of the season, that is until La Loggia threw up a roadbock and swept the Blue Girls back to Bologna. La Loggia and the Blue Girls have now switched places in the standings: La Loggia is in 2nd place and Bologna is in 3rd place.

Fermana put the freeze on Bollate over the weekend, winning 5-1 and 3-2 (8 innings).  Fermana is looking to play the role of spoiler and inflicted some noteworthy damage to Bollate’s postseason chances.  In 5th place now, Bollate now finds them outside looking in. Fermana remains in last-place but could get out of the dog house as early as next week, since Fermana is only a half-game behind the Titano Hornets.

The Hornets have been receiving more stings than they have been giving in 2012.  The Hornets have been flying low and off the radar all season and haven’t really been able to sink their teeth into some good softball playing. The Hornets were able to get their hive together to split their doubleheader with lackluster Legnano. Legnano is in the midst of a rebuilding phase and engine overhaul.

Nuoro had the week off.
