ALGHERO, Sardinia -- Approximately 440 children participated in the annual festival in the city of Alghero that caps off the end of the school year and the conclusion of a project that was integrated into the school curriculum.  The initiative was strongly backed by the regional office of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI)  in collaboration with the local team in baseball, the Alghero Tigers.

Formal collaborations with the city and school systems are central to the introduction of baseball in Italy, where soccer enjoys most of the sport culture.  School projects are a vehicle to expose more prospective boy and girl athletes to the world of baseball and softball, and sport in general, further developing baseball in the country and reinforcing future Italian National Baseball Teams, the Azzuri.
