Softball bronze medal game-bound Canada beats Team Italy 8-1 in Tokyo Olympics

The Team Italy women's softball squad ended the Tokyo Olympics with an 8-1 loss to bronze medal game-bound Canada in Yokahama on July 26, 2021

Canada starter Danielle Lawrie and winning pitcher Lauren Regula combined to limit Team Italy to one run on hour hits to win by a score of 8-1 in a mercy-rule six-inning Tokyo Olympic game in Yokahama on Monday, July 26, 2021. Team Italy threatened to get on the board early in bottom of the first inning with back-to-back singles by Andrea Filler and Erika Piancastelli, but the Italians could not cash in.

After Canada scored one run in the top of the second and third innings off Team Italy starting pitcher Greta Cecchetti, the Azzurre softball squad produced its only run of the Tokyo Olympics when Laura Vigna doubled and later crossed the plate on an RBI single by Erika Piancastelli. Canada put up three runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings off reliever Alexia Lacatena to end the contest via mercy rule.

BOX SCORE

With the 8-1 loss to Canada, Team Italy (0-5) returns home regrettably without a medal #PerEnrico. Canada plays the winner of the Mexico and Australia game for the battle of the bronze, while USA and host Japan clash in the gold medal game. Forza #Italia!
