Team Italy picks up two mercy-rule wins on day one of U18 Women’s European Softball Championship

Team Italy easily defeated Poland and Croatia on opening day of the U18 Women’s European Softball Championship in Prague, Czech Republic on July 19, 2021

Mercy rule was the operative word for defending Euro champion Team Italy on day one of the U18 Women’s European Softball Championship in Prague, Czech Republic on Monday, July 19, 2021. The Azzurrine softball squad pulverized Poland 16-1 in five innings before crushing Croatia with a 13-0 shutout in four innings. Scheduled starting pitcher Maya Milano was scratched prior to the start of the contest against Croatia due to a knee injury sustained during her warm-up. The young and talent hurler is currently being evaluated by the medical staff to determine if she will be able to participate in the international tournament.

Team Italy manager Andrea Longagnani was pleased with the starting pitcher performance of Beatrice Nannetti in game one against Poland She allowed five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks and was supported by a strong Azzurrine offense. Catcher Clara Carati went 3-for-3 with one double, 5ive RBI and three runs scored. Infielder Sarah Bortolotti contributed with one double, one triple, four RBI and one run scored. Speedy leadoff hitter and shortstop Anita Bartoli swiped two bags while on the bases after an RBI single and a walk. She also scored twice. .

In the 13-0 shutout over Croatia, Sarah Bortolotti threw a one-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks. Team Italy offensive highlights included a two RBI single from Angelica Agro, RBI doubles by Alessandra Maviilla and Alice Carati and triples from Elena Cavaglieri (two RBI) and Clara Carati.
