Unipol Bologna comes out on top after getting a little scare from the underdog Prague Eagles club on Thursday morning in Regensburg, Germany. Bologna’s offense seemed baffled by Prague’s starting pitcher, David Barta, as the right-hander held his ground throughout the game by throwing 144 pitches in 9. Unipol scored first in this one when they picked up one in the 3rd as Ermini scored an unearned run on a double play ball off the bat of Auguila. The Eagles gave it their best when they tied the game in the 7th and were inches away from taking the lead, but were denied by a diving Malengo at first base as he saved a run, possibly more. In the 9th, Liverziani came to bat with two outs and knocked a double to right-center which was then followed by an RBI single off the bat of Aguila, putting Unipol up by one going into the bottom of the 9th where Fabio Milano recorded the first out of the inning before being relieved by Pugliese who earned the save. Bologna’s offense was a little to quite in this one, 7 hits in all. Both Aguila and Nosti picked up 2 hits apiece for Unipol. Notably, Richetti threw a strong 7 where he gave up 1 run on 3 hits (no walks) and struck out 7.

With the win, Bologna now sits pretty when it comes to making it to the final game of the Regensburg, Germany bracket on Sunday afternoon. If they’re able to take care of the Bern Cardinals on Friday morning and remain undefeated in the bracket they will be playing for a chance to move on the to the finals to defend their 2012 title.
