Team Italy blanked by Chinese Taipei in U12 Baseball World Cup

Holding Chinese Taipei to one run going into the bottom of the third inning, Team Italy gave way to an offensive frenzy in the bottom of the third and fourth inning and fell victim to a four-inning mercy-rule 15-0 shutout at the U12 Baseball World Cup in Tainan, Taiwan on Tuesday, August 2, 2022

Team Italy played in front of its biggest crowd against host Chinese Taipei in the U12 Baseball World Cup in Tainan City on Tuesday, August 2, 2022. Both teams received a standing ovation at the conclusion of the contest.

After giving up a leadoff double and an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning, Team Italy starting pitcher Anita Bissa threw a scoreless second inning.  Then Chinese Taipei chased her out of the game when she surrendered a double, an RBI single and an RBI double to start the bottom of the third inning.  

Team Italy manager Stefano Burato had to use relievers Lorenzo Ruberto and Diego Di Chiarra in the third inning when eight additional runs scored. Pitcher Pierangelo Ongara made a brief appearance in the fourth inning before Chinese Taipei enforced the mercy rule in the 15-0 shutout.

Chinese Taipei pitching limited the Azzurrini offense to just a single by Diego Di Chiarra in the top of the first inning and a single from Tommaso Destro in the top of the fourth inning.

While Chinese Taipei moves on to the Super Round, the Italians are relegated to the Placement Round. Team Italy (1-4) returns for its next game in Tainan City against Czech Republic (0-4) on Thursday, August 4, 2022. Location and start time to be announced. Forza #Italia!
