Team Italy beats Belgium 14-3 in European Baseball Championship

On day two of the European Baseball Championship in Torino, Team Italy defeated Belgium 14-3 via mercy rule in seven innings. Azzurri captain Alberto Mineo hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to nail the coffin shut on Belgium when closer Matteo Bocchi got the third out in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Team Italy starting pitcher Tiago Da Silva went four innings and allowed three runs on five hits with six strikeouts and one walk before handing the ball off to winning pitcher Angelo Palumbo, who held Belgium scoreless for two innings and allowed just one hit with three strikeouts and two walks on Monday, September 13, 2021 in Torino.

The Team Italy offense was fueled by Leo Ferrini (2-4, 2B, BB, 2 SB, 2 R), Dario Pizzano (2-4, 2B, 3 RBI, BB, 2 R), Vito Friscia (1-1, 2B, 3 BB, 2 RBI, 2 R,), Alberto Mineo (3-4, 3B, HR, 7 RBI, R), Ernesto Liberatore (1-5, 2B, R, RBI) and Mattia Mercuri (1-2, BB, RBI, 2 R).

Undefeated Team Italy (2-0) travels to nearby Avigliano on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 to conclude Group A round-robin play with a game against Austria (1-1) under the lights at 8:30 pm (local time). With the 14-3 win over winless Belgium (0-2), the Italians are guaranteed to advance to the European Baseball Championship quarterfinals on Thursday, September 16, 2021.
