Team Italy women's softball manager Federico Pizzolini is currently putting players in different positions during Florida Spring Training at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex in Vero Beach. He will have the difficult task of trimming down his promising Azzurre roster to 15 of most versatile players before departing for the Tokyo Olympics from July 21-27, 2021.
Barring any injuries, Team Italy players will have the ability to showcase what they are capable of defensively in Florida. Catcher Marta Gasparatto was playing shortstop when she injured her knee in the team's first official field practice on April 17, 2021. She is not expected to participate in any further activities until Team Italy departs for the CenturyLink Sports Complex in Fort Myers, where the Tokyo-bound squad will play a pair of doubleheaders against Olympic foe Team Canada on April 25 and 26. The Azzurre team endured another injury in today's practice when utility player Melany Sheldon sustained an injury to her left wrist. Team physician Dr. Alessandro Butta is optimistic that she will return to action tomorrow.
It is anticipated that Team Italy manager Federico Pizzolini will place his players for the remainder of the Vero Beach Spring Training in the following positions:
Pitchers: Greta Cecchetti, Ilaria Cacciamani, Alexia Lacatena and Alice Nicolini
Catchers: Erika Piancastelli and Silvia Torre
First base: Andrea Howard, Amanda Fama, Beatrice Ricchi and Priscilla Brandi
