After being crowned the prestigious Australian Baseball League (ABL) Fans Choice in 2012, Team Italy pitcher Alessandro Maestri hopes to repeat history in 2019 with a second ABL Fans Choice Award. As the workhorse of the Brisbane Bandits pitching staff during the 2011-12 ABL season, Alessandro Maestri led his team in wins (4) and proved to be one of the best pitchers in the league. He finished third in the ABL in innings pitched (63.2) and in strikeouts (53), fourth in the ABL in WHIP (1.16) and sixth in the ABL in ERA (3.25).
In round eight of the regular season, Alessandro Maestri was named as the ABL Pitcher of the Week after pitching a stellar complete game two-hitter against the Canberra Cavalry and later received the prestigious ABL Fans Choice Award. He also pitched for Team World in the 2011-2012 ABL All-Star Game. Alessandro Maestri made a lasting impression on everyone while playing baseball in Australia, and it was only a matter of time before he would be called back for an encore.
Fast forward more than six years, and we find Alessandro Maestri once again dominating in the ABL. This time around he achieved success pitching for the Sydney Blue Sox during the 2018-19 ABL season. The 33-year-old Italian pitcher soon became the team's ace. He was named to Round 5 Brut ABL Team of the Week on December 17, 2018 after striking out a season-high 13 hitters and allowing just one hit in six scoreless innings against the Melbourne Aces. Alessandro Maestri helped the Sydney Blue Sox win the ABL Northeast Division and clinch a playoff spot. The ABL leader in strikeouts (73) during the regular season, Alessandro Maestri put up some impressive numbers: 5 wins, 2.92 ERA, 52.1 IP, 14 BB, and 1.20 WHIP. He is now preparing for the ABL playoffs and is worthy of his second career ABL Fans Choice Award. To cast your ABL Fans Choice Award vote for Alessandro Maestri, click HERE.
