Italy walk away winners yet again on Tuesday afternoon, closing off their first round of European Championship as the top seed out of Group A with a perfect 5 and 0. The final of Tuesday game against great Britain was by the large margin of 13 to 1. It was a game dominated by the Italians, in particular their third baseman, Alex Liddi. Tuesday proved to be a really special day for Liddi after he homered in his first three plate appearances, finishing off the day with a perfect 3 for 3, including 3 home runs, 1 walk, 3 runs scored, and 4 RBI’s. Italy as a team banged out a total of 15 hits in the 13 to 1 rout of England, while their pitching was able to follow suit allowing just 5 total hits, 5 walks, and just 1 run. Picking up the win for Italy was Morreale, while on the Britain’s side it was Mike Renery that suffered the loss. Up next for Italy in round two will be Spain on Thursday in Brno.
Italy’s offense lead Pool A in the first round of the tournament at a .362 mark. The club as a whole banged out an impressive 8 homeruns, and crossed 54 runs in just five games, which also led the pool. Their pitching also finished at the top at the top with a team ERA of 2.57. The Italian mound as a whole allowed just 14 total runs (to 54 scored) thanks to holding opposing hitters to a .221 average at the plate. Now that the second phase begins in Brno, Czech Republic, we’ll have to wait and see how the top from Pool A match up with the top of Pool B. Italy will start things off with a game against Spain on Thursday at 11:00 am, the Czech Republic on Friday at 7:00 pm, and then the powerhouse Netherlands on Saturday at 7:00 pm.
