The Italians picked up their second win in as many days at this year’s European Championship in Regensburg, Germany. The win puts the team Italy at 2-0 in the wins-losses column, with Yomel Rivera picking up the win, just a day after the Italian mound struggled against Belgium. Rivera went 6.1 for the win, where he surrendered just 2 hits, 2 walks and just a single run to Sweden. Italy took their first lead of the game in the 2nd with a single runs, and just an inning later the two time defending European Champs picked up a huge 6 runs for the 7-0 advantage. At the plate it was Alex Sambucci that picked up his second round-tripper in as many days when he homered to right center with two runners on in the Italian’s 6 run 3rd. Team Italy picked up a total of 14 hits in the game to Sweden’s 4, with Chiarini and Mineo both going 3 for 4 at the dish of which included 2 doubles by both of them, while Infante, Epifano and Desimoni all picked up 2 hits apiece. Sambucci and Epifano both also drove in 3 runs each. Tonight Italy will match up against France with a game time of 7:00 pm local time. It was the second loss of the day for Sweden, after having dropped their first game 7 to 1 at the hands of Great Britain in a game that took place on Saturday morning (9:30 am), right before Italy took the field against them at 1:30 pm.
Italy picked up their 1st run of the game in the 2nd on an RBI groundout off the bat of Epifano. In the third it was first Sambucci’s 3 run homer, that was then followed up by an RBI double off the bat of Mineo, an RBI single by Epifano and finally an RBI walk to Ermini with 2 outs and the bases loaded. Between the 4th and 5th, Italy scored another 3 runs off of Jacob Syren to put the score at 10-0 in the box score. Team Italy finally tacked on their last 2 runs of the game in the bottom of the 8th after Sweden had scored 2 in the top of the frame on a long ball off the bat of Simon Emanuelsson. The final tally in the contest was 12-3, as Italy is now off and running towards their goal of a three-peat.
