Spain beats the Czech, but fall to Italy in the nightcap 1-0

In the second game of the day at the Italian Baseball Week tournament between the host nation Italy verses Spain it was Italy that walked away with 1-0 win. It was Spain’s second game of the day, having beaten the Czech in an afternoon matchup by the final of 9 to 2. The game marked the 150th appearance for Italy’s team captain, Mario Chiarini, with him being penciled in as the designated hitter in the 5 hole.

Getting the start on the hill for Italy was Richetti, just one of 5 pitchers used by Italy in the game. As a hole, Rhchetti, Crepaldi, Teran, Panerati and Cooper combined for the complete game 1-0 shutout over Spain, with Teran qualifying for the win and Cooper for the save. Suffering the loss on Spain side was Hernandez (5 ip, 2 h, 1 r, 4 bb, 5 so), who allowed just 1 run off of 2 hits and 4 walks. Italy’s run came in the bottom of the 1st when Avagnina scored on a bases loaded walk to Mineo. Earning the MVP honors for game was Italy’s shortstop Infante.

In the opening game at this year’s Italian Baseball Week it was Spain that made the 1st impression in the winners column with a 9-2 victory over the Czech Republic. Picking up the win for Spain was Jones Borja, while at the plate Martinez had a spectacular day at the plate, going 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 3 RBI’s.
