Rimini takes game one of the IBL Series

Rimini opened up the 2013 Italian Baseball Series with a 4-1 win over San Marino thanks to a 3 run top of the 11th inning on Friday evening. Game one turned out to be quite the battle between the Rimini Pirates and T&A San Marino, with the contest needing two extra frames for the victor to be decided. Both mounds were spectacular in this opening game of the series. The two offensives scored one run apiece in the 2nd, then went into hibernation until the Pirates put up three in the 11th. Driving in the go-ahead run was Buccheri, while it was Zileri who picked up the other two RBI’s with a double down the leftfield line.

Friday evening’s game featured the Venezuelan, Yorman Bazardo, for Rimini vs. the American, Jim Magrane, for San Marino. Two proven starters, as well as two guys coming off of very productive years. Once the game got underway, after Alex De Angelis threw out the games ceremonial first pitch, both Magrane and Bazardo matched each other inning for inning, giving up one apiece in the second and nothing else. Magrane and Bazardo both went 1,2,3 in inning on, but then Bertagnon’s two out single for Rimini and Mazzuca’s sac fly for San Marino broke the score for both clubs in the 2nd (1-1). From that point on however neither clubs were able to manufacture anything, in fact from the 3rd till Rimini’s 3 run 11th only one runner reached third base, it being Zileri in the 8th. He was stranded thanks to Cubilan being able to tiptoe around runners on 1st and 3rd with no one out, retiring Rimini’s 3 (Romero), 5 (Chiarini) and 6 (Gomez) hitters. Bazardo’s day ended in the 6th, coming out with a line of 6.1 innings pitched, 3 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts. He was relieved by Enorbel Marquez (5.2 ip 3 h, 0 r, 1 bb, 3 so) who pitched from the 6th till the 11th picking up the win in what turned out to be a very lengthy relief appearance. On the other side of the ball Jim Magrane went 7, before Cubilan, who suffered the loss, came on for 3.1. Cristopher Cooper also made his first appearance in weeks, and was welcomed back with a 2 run double by Zileri in the 11th that put the score at 4-1. Both runs were charged to Cubilan.

The games standouts for Rimini in this game one victory where the dual of Bazardo and Marquez on the mound, while Zileri (3 for 6, 2 RBI’s), Bertagnon (2 for 4 with 1 run scored and 1 RBI), and Buccheri (1 RBI) turned out to be the protagonists with the bat. Game two will be tonight in San Marino with a start time of 20:30 cet.
