ROME, Italy -- With defending FIBS Serie A Baseball League champions Reggio Emilia on the sidelines, the season got underway with 9 sets of double-headers during Week 1. Ten teams split their double-headers with one another, and four teams--Arezzo, Bollate, Modena and Redipuglia--got off to a perfect start, sweeping their respective opening series.
In the North Conference, Bollate easily moved past newcomer Bologna 12-2 and 10-6 on the road in Bologna.
Redipuglia opened with a surprise double-header sweep of its own at home versus 2010 runner-up Codogno. Redipuglia took the first game 8-6 and required 11 innings to complete the sweep with a 4-3 squeaker.
Neighbors Rovigo and Piacenza split their 2 games against each other. Rovigo took the first game 6-3 against host Piacenza, but Piacenza returned the favor with a 6-4 victory under the lights.
Padova and Juve ‘98 were engaged in a slugfest opener that saw Padova come out victorious 13-11. Juve '98 recuperated nicely to take the nightcap 6-2.
Ponte di Piave traveled to Collecchhio where they split a pair of games with the home team. Collecchio won a tight opening game 4-3, but Ponte di Piave charged up the offense in an 11-5 win to prevent the sweep.
In the South Conference, Arezzo got off to a good start by sweeping an always dangerous Anzio team. Arezzo only needed 7 innings in the first game, as it used a 10-run mercy rule. In the rematch, Arezzo pitching stayed effective in a 6-2 win.
Modena completed a straightforward sweep of visiting Poviglio 9-5 and 2-0.
Sala Baganza and Rome divvied up the two games they played with one another. Rome came out strong with an 11-2 win at Sala Baganza, but Sala Baganza used some consistent pitching to shut down Rome's offense in a 3-1 afternoon win.
To round out the action of Week 1, Crocetta made the trip over to Sicily in order to share the 2 victories with host team Messina. Messina took the season opener 7-3, while Crocetta won an exciting 5-4 game under the lights.
