ROME, Italy--The opening weekend of Italian Softball League was highlighted by sweeps defending ISL champion Caserta, Macerata and Titano Hornets.
Caserta used a shutout by Anjelica Selden in the series opener to beat Fermana 5-0 and then sealed the two game sweep with a 3-1 win against the host team Fermana. Third baseman Roya St. Clair homered for Fermana to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, but it was not enough to top the 2009 and 2010 ISF champs.
Caserta will be home against Macerata in this weekend. Macerata pulled off a sweep themselves on the road against newly promoted Caronno. Macerata pitcher Kristen Wadwell failed to allow a run in the first contest, while homeruns by Campalani and Wadwell powered Macerata in the nightcap.
Caronno will try to rebound at Legnano in Week 2. During Week 1, Legnano split a double-header with Nuoro. Legnano came out charging in the opening game with 10-0 win, but Nuoro managed to slip by Legnano 3-2 in the evening match-up to even the series.
Nuoro will try to give the Titano Hornets their first loss of the young season this weekend. In the season opener, the Titano Hornets stung Fiorini Forlì. In the first match-up, Titano launcher Alice Ronchetti won the contest against fellow fireballer Mara Papucci. The Hornets brought out the bats to rack up eight hits in the 5-3 victory. The Hornets stung again to win 1-0 in extra-innings of the tail end of the double-header. Titano's Megan Brown and Forli's Kyle Reynolds refused to let either offense establish any threat until the 8th inning with 2 outs when an infield dribbler allowed the winning run to score.
La Loggia and Bollate rounded out the action of the first week of competition in the Italian Softball League. The two teams split their double-header, with La Loggia blanking Bollate 7-0 in the opener and Bollate battling back in game 2 to top La Loggia 2-1.
La Loggia will try to keep Fermana winless this weekend, while Bollate will have its sights set on keeping Forli with 0 wins next to its name.
