After six weeks of maintaining a perfect record, AMGA Legnano finally fell victim in Week 7 of the Italian Softball League, but the loss did not affect Legnano's lead of two games over Fiorini Forli and Madige La Loggia. Museo d'Arte Nuoro has turned up the heat lately with a sweep on the road against second-place Forli in Week 6 and then shutting out the previously undefeated Legnano in the opening game of their doubleheader.
The environment has been less than ideal for the girls of summer. After several games were postponed due to the indigestion problem of the volcano in Iceland, rain has now stymied the playing schedule. Two doubleheaders had to be canceled due to a downpour of rain: Mosca Macerata and Unione Fermana were unable to contest their scheduled doubleheader in Macerata, while the Titano Hornets made the trip down south to Caserta only to have the doubleheader washed out.
Conditions in Sardinia allowed the two-game set between Nuoro and Legnano to take place. Nuoro's Paola Cavallo silenced the dangerous Legnano batters over seven innings in the 5-0 victory. Cavallo only permitted 3 hits in the game and compiled 7 strikeouts en route to shutting out Legnano and handing the team from Lombardy the first loss of the season. In the 2nd inning, Loredana Spada drilled a 2-run double off Laura Gerussi to give Nuoro the early lead; Ambra Collina followed up with a home run in the 4th, while Maria Marchesano put the icing on the cake with a 2-run single to centerfield in the bottom of the 6th.
The softballers from Legnano quickly asserted their dominance in the rematch winning 7-0. Legnano used the 7-run mercy rule to end the game in the 6th inning. Qing Yan Zhang collected her third victory on the season. Zhang went the distance, allowing just 1 hit and 1 bb, while compiling 8 punch outs against Nuoro batters. Clare Warwick sparked the Legnano office with 3 hits and 2 runs scored, while Ilaria Pino walloped a 2-run home run.
Over in La Loggia, Madige La Loggia hosted Fiorini Forli. Both teams came into the series with a 7-3 record, which was good enough for second place. The teams split their series, thus not making up any ground on first place Legnano. Pitcher Serena Filiput (6 IP, 3H, 1R) helped Forli pick up the 3-1 win over La Loggia in the opening game of the doubleheader. Forli's Tyleen Tausaga (.417) went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI and a 1 run scored to power the offence.
La Loggia rebounded nicely with a 6-3 victory. Kelly Hardie (7 IP, 7H, 3 R, 8 K) managed a complete game to earn the win and helped her own cause with her first home run of the season. La Loggia leadoff hitter Brenda DeBlaes also flexed her muscles for a solo home run to start the bottom of the first inning. Centerfield Irene Barone gathered 3 RBI, but was a bit slippery with the glove, committing 2 errors.
Sanotint Bollate had the week off.
